Sparham Hall, River Wensum at Lyng
Please note that due to recent overwhelming enquiries, we have temporarily closed our waiting lists.
Upstream of the mill pools at Lyng, this slower and deeper 11/2 mile stretch of river continues to offer a challenge to specimen hunters. Historically the fishery held a shoal of large bream known to exceed eleven pounds in weight, though it is not known how many of them remain to be caught. There are some huge chub running to over seven pounds in recent years, likewise roach to two pounds plus, double figure pike up to twenty plus, and odd big perch.
A lovely quiet place overlooked by Sparham Hall itself, giving rise to the name.
This stretch was earmarked some years ago for an NACA roach-based restoration project which for various reasons never happened. We have funding to revisit and scope out a similar project, which we hope to achieve and implement once a number of issues have been resolved. (There is a land drainage/flood protection project looming, and also the situation with the mill sluice gates and resultant water levels etc need addressing first)
Access and car parking is at both upstream and downstream ends of the fishery, with a short "no fishing" section roughly in the middle.
